Pres. Duterte Hindi Mapigil Ang Panlulumo Sa Pagbisita Kay Joanna Demafelis. Nagbigay Ng P500K Financial Assistance!

President Rodrigo Duterte flew to the reputed "bedrock" of the illegal drug trade Iloilo to visit the wake of OFW Joanna Demafelis.

The President offered his heartfelt condolences to the family of Joanna Demafelis, 29, in Sara, Iloilo.

Demafelis was reported by her kin as missing since November, 2016 was discovered inside the freezer of her employer – a Lebanese man and a Syrian woman – last February 6 more than a year after her employers left at the same time she went missing.

Autopsy report showed Demafelis had several broken ribs, contusion and trauma in the pelvis and kidney area. She also suffered from internal bleeding. Several wounds were also found on Demafelis’ body.

The autopsy also showed Demafelis was already dead when she was stuffed inside the freezer.

Saddened and angered at the death of the OFW, President Duterte declared a total ban of new recruits to Kuwait. Duterte expressed his disappointment with officials of Kuwait and reminded them how the Philippines supported their country during the Gulf War.

Only key officials – Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Administrator Hans Leo Cacdac and Presidential spokesman Harry Roque were allowed to join the President inside the Demafelis residence Thursday.

The President pledged the amount of P500,000 to the bereaved Demafelis family and verbally promised them that he will shoulder the cost in completing the renovation of the house which was destroyed by super-typhoon Yolanda in November 2013.

This is the reason why Joanna decided to leave for Kuwait in 2014 and promised her parents to rebuild their typhoon-damaged home.

Roque said the President also pledged to give scholarship to Joyce, the youngest sister of Joanna who was forced to stop schooling when Joanna went missing. Joanna was sending Joyce to school.

Aside from these, the Demafelis family is also entitled to an insurance worth US$15,000.

During the Senate hearing Wednesday, Sen. Manny Pacquaio assured the Demafelis family that he would buy back the three-hectare property which the family pawned to a former military officer for P300,000. The family was hoping they could pay back the property through Joanna’s help.

Outside the Demafelis residence, hundreds of Ilonggos gathered to catch a glimpse of Duterte. For many Ilonggos, Duterte’s visit meant a change of heart for a place he described as the “most shabulized” referring to the widespread trade of shabu.
